what parts are involved in starter turning over and disengaging when started

my omc 2.3 will not turn over with the key. I can junp the starter and it will start but the starter stays engaged until I take the negative battery cable off.

I suspect the assist selenoid for not disengaging but am not sure and suspect the ignition or a neurtal switch for not turning over with the key.

should I be using a meter on the yellow and red lead at the selonoid, where else to pin point why starter doesnt engage with key

the starter circuit starts at the key switch

then to the neutral safety switch in the control box

thru the cannon plug at the engine

to the slave solenoid on the engine

finally to the solenoid on top of the starter

a 12 volt test light or a meter will work

for troubleshooting
