I recently was given a 7.5 mercury, runs well, by a fellow who has owned it for a long time. The serial plate is missing, but on the side of the engine block it is written: SN 200275. Above this it says 1971. That's it. no 7th digit. Any thoughts would be appreciated as I'll need parts sooner or later. I really want to know what serial # or even a close guess @ the year to get parts later on.

Look on the freeze plug on the block if its still there it will have the serial number on it good luck steve.
I've heard that, where is this freeze plug? This # I found is stamped on the block casting, if you are looking @ the plugs, on the right side. Clear as day, but only 6 digits. is it at least guaranteed a 1971? Doesn't look that old.
Hi Frank,
Honestly, with a motor that old the serial number will most likely not be much help for looking up parts. I was actually able to find what should be the diagram for your motor using the horsepower/serial range (it only shows one diagram for a Mercury 7.5) so take a look and see if it looks right. Here's the link: Mercury 7.5
Hope that helps. Have a great Labor Day!
