The easiest way to see if the charging system is working is to put a multi-meter on the battery. With the motor off you should have around 12.5Vdc with the motor at idle you should have around 14.4Vdc and at higher RPM's you should have around 15Vdc.
You can also check the leads coming off of the stator most of the time the wires are yellow. You can unplug this harness while the motor is running. And put the red lead to one of the terminals and ground the other to a known good ground. Test the two or three leads on the stator and you should be getting about the same voltage off all the leads.
This test is done on the 20Vac setting on the meter. If all the leads are giving consistent voltage at any rpm your stator is good and you may have another problem like the regulator/rectifier or something else.

You should look at the regilator it shound like it is bad to test it you take the ohm meter and check leads voltage should flow one way and not the other thanks steve.
