Stringer - 1985 Engine runs & outdrive shifts, no through power

we have a 1985 Bayliner 305 with OMC stringer. all of a sudden with slight noise.
The engine runs and when I shift out drive F N R all seem fine. Did we shear something in the intermediate housing?? is there a common failure point there where the engine and outdrive would be good.
