i have a 1996 johnson 175hp outboard with no remote oil tank. i was told to pre mix the gas 50:1 that way the oil system cannot fail. besides pluging the oil line what other modifications need to be done if any. p.s. is this the best way to go like i have been told

BRP only recommends using their pre-mix kit (5007422), but it does retail at about the same price as a new pump. From what I've heard, you should be able to just plug off the oil side of the pump. A lot of people do this because the VRO pump had a lot of problems. To be honest, when BRP took over OMC they redesigned the VRO pump and the new pumps (5007420) are much better than the old OMC made pumps. Most people convert to pre-mix because they don't want to spend $430 on a new fuel/oil pump. I hope that information helps.

you also need to disconect the purple wire that goes to the VRO pump or your no oil alarm will go off and put the motor into slow.
