voltage of 16.7-17.0

I operate a Yamaha 150 HPDI (2001)2 sroke and the yamaha supplied instrument guages indicate a flashing voltage of greater than 16.5 at any rpm above idle. I put a multi-tester on the battery + and - cables and verified that the voltage was indeed 16 volts or more.
Is there an adjustment required? Can I do it myself?

I would think the cause is the regulator/rectifier, that part is responsible for dumping the excess voltage. Faulty reg/rec will damage the battery by overcharging. The job itself is pretty easy but should be diagnosed professionally to avoid buying expensive unnecessary parts.

Thanks
